Heidenmauer & Devil's Stone
The Heidenmauer on the Kästenberg above Bad Dürkheim is a vast Celtic ring rampart that more than 2,000 years ago enclosed an extensive Celtic hilltop settlement. Over several kilometres, the course of the once metre-high drystone wall can still be traced through the forest as an overgrown ridge of stone. Close by lies the Kriemhildenstuhl, a well-preserved Roman quarry where legionaries cut sandstone for their buildings — tool marks and inscriptions are still visible in the rock today. Nearby rises the legend-shrouded Devil's Stone, a striking block of rock around which many tales are woven. Marked hiking trails through the Palatinate Forest connect the archaeological sites and reveal the region's history from the Celtic era to the Romans. Anyone wandering here experiences shady mixed woodland, quiet clearings and prehistory you can touch in an impressive way.
