Drachenfels Rock in the Palatinate Forest
The Drachenfels is a striking red-sandstone rock in the Palatinate Forest above Bad Dürkheim and a popular destination for hikers and climbers. Steps, staircases, seat niches and chambers carved into the red rock date from a medieval rock castle, whose remains can still be freely explored today and lend the site a mysterious atmosphere. The rugged sandstone walls are a classic for climbers and boulderers, while marked hiking trails lead comfortably up from Schillerhain or from the valley below. From the rock plateaus, the view reaches far across the wooded heights of the Palatinate Forest, the Isenach valley and the wine country to the Rhine plain. Tables and shady spots invite you to rest with a view, ideally on a longer tour towards the Limburg or the Hardenburg. The climb is well worth it for the special combination of rugged nature, medieval history and a wide panorama.
