Hardenburg Castle Ruins

The Hardenburg castle ruins are among the largest and most impressive castle ruins in the Palatinate, perched on a mountain spur just outside Bad Dürkheim. For centuries they were the ancestral seat of the Counts of Leiningen, who from the 16th century expanded the medieval castle into a fortified Renaissance stronghold with a residential palace. Massive walls, gun towers, bastions and a walkable system of casemates still bear witness today to its former power, before French troops and a fire destroyed it in the 18th century. Narrow stairs and passages let visitors explore the sprawling complex on their own, while information panels and an exhibition explain its building and family history. Set high above the wooded Isenach valley, the ruins offer fine views into the Palatinate Forest at every turn. A visit combines well with a hike through the Isenach valley or a stop at the Hardenburg.
