Limburg Monastery Ruins
On the Limburgberg above Bad Dürkheim rise the impressive remains of a Salian Benedictine monastery, founded in 1035 by Emperor Conrad II on the site of an earlier Salian castle. The Romanesque monastery ruins are among the most important buildings of their era in the Palatinate; mighty pillars and round arches still hint at the former scale of the three-aisled basilica. From their hilltop, the Limburg offers wide views over the vineyards, the Isenach valley and, in clear weather, as far as the Rhine valley. In summer the atmospheric ruins become a stage, with concerts, markets and festivals — above all the popular serenades — drawing many visitors. A short climb from the edge of town or a leisurely walk through the Palatinate Forest leads up, ideally combined with a stop at the restaurant next door. So the Limburg blends history, nature and panorama into one of the town's finest excursion destinations.
