History in Bad Dürkheim
Limburg, Hardenburg and the Heidenmauer rampart
Bad Dürkheim's history reaches from Celtic beginnings through the Middle Ages and can still be read in the landscape today. Above the town towers the Limburg monastery ruin, once a powerful Salian abbey whose walls form an impressive backdrop. The nearby Hardenburg castle ruin is among the largest fortifications in the Palatinate and offers a glimpse into the life of a noble family. Older still is the Heidenmauer, a Celtic ring rampart from pre-Christian times that attests to the early settlement of the Palatinate Forest. These monuments turn a visit into a journey across many centuries.
