Roman Villa Weilberg
The Roman Villa Weilberg above the wine village of Ungstein is the excavation site of a stately Roman manor (villa rustica) from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Particularly remarkable is the exposed winepress with its treading basins, which vividly proves that the Romans already grew and pressed wine along what is now the German Wine Route. The conserved foundation walls of the main house, the former bath with its hypocaust heating and the surrounding farm buildings bring life on an ancient wine estate to life. Information panels along a short circular path explain the layout of the complex and its rediscovery during excavations. Set amid the vine slopes, the freely accessible Villa Weilberg combines archaeology with a wonderful view over the wine country to the Rhine plain. It is ideally combined with a walk through the Ungstein vineyards and a stop at a local winegrower.
