German Wine Route & Vineyards
Around Bad Dürkheim unfolds one of the most beautiful landscapes of the German Wine Route, Germany's oldest tourist wine route and a showcase of Palatinate winemaking tradition. Gentle vine slopes stretch from Ungstein over Leistadt and the famous Kallstadt up into the heights of the Palatinate Forest, shaping the region's mild, almost Mediterranean flair, where even figs and almond trees flourish. Renowned vineyards such as the Ungsteiner Herrenberg or the Kallstadter Saumagen produce robust Rieslings and fruity red wines. Numerous cycling and hiking trails lead right through the vineyards, past winegrowers' estates, rustic Straußwirtschaften and viewpoints overlooking the Rhine plain. In spring the almond blossom turns the slopes into a sea of pink, and in late summer and fall, when the harvest begins, the atmosphere in the golden wine country is especially striking. A stop at a local winegrower with Riesling and a wine spritzer rounds off any outing along the Wine Route.
