Wine & Hiking on the German Wine Route

Bad Dürkheim lies where the German Wine Route and the Palatinate Forest meet — ideal for anyone who wants to combine wine and hiking. This day leads through the vineyards around Ungstein, up to the Limburg monastery ruins with their far-reaching views and into the Palatinate Forest to the striking Drachenfels rock. The finale is a wine tasting at a winemaker's. Vines, forest and wine — the Palatinate on foot.

Best time to visit: April to October — when the vines turn green and the forest paths are dry

Wine & Hiking on the German Wine Route

Day 1

Vines, rock and wine

We start in the vineyards of the German Wine Route, climb up to the Limburg monastery ruins, hike to the Drachenfels and finish with a wine tasting.

  1. 9:00 - 10:45

    A hike through the vineyards

The day begins among the vines: hiking paths lead through the vineyards of the German Wine Route around Ungstein. Gentle hills, dry-stone walls and wide views over the Rhine plain make the opening a pleasure — the Palatinate as far as the eye can see.

Tip: Start early — before the midday heat, hiking among the vines is at its most pleasant.

  2. 11:00 - 12:30

Climb to the Limburg monastery ruins

From the vineyards, the route climbs up to the Limburg monastery ruins on the Limburg hill. The remains of the Salian Benedictine abbey of 1035 reward you with mighty walls and a magnificent panorama over town, vineyards and the Palatinate Forest — a worthwhile high point of the stage.

  3. 12:30 - 13:45

    A stop along the way

A well-earned break in a seasonal vintner's pub or wine tavern along the path — Flammkuchen, a hearty Palatinate platter and a glass of wine provide strength for the afternoon in the forest.

  4. 14:00 - 15:30

    Heidenmauer & Devil's Stone

On the way into the forest lie the Heidenmauer, a Celtic ring rampart, and the Roman quarry with the Devil's Stone (Teufelsstein). An atmospheric section through the Palatinate Forest with traces from Celtic and Roman times.

  5. 15:45 - 17:15

    Drachenfels in the Palatinate Forest

Deeper in the forest rises the Drachenfels — a striking sandstone rock with the remains of a rock castle, popular with climbers. From the rock, the view sweeps far over the wooded heights of the Palatinate Forest. A wildly romantic turning point of the hike.

Tip: At the Drachenfels some paths are rocky — sure-footedness and sturdy shoes are important here.

  6. 18:00 - 20:00

    Wine tasting & Palatinate cuisine

To finish, a wine tasting at a winemaker's around Ungstein, followed by a Palatinate dinner. Riesling and Dornfelder straight from the producer, paired with Saumagen or cheese — the perfect conclusion to a day of wine and hiking.
