St Johannis Castle Church

St Johannis Castle Church is the Protestant town church of Bad Dürkheim and an important example of late-Gothic architecture in the Palatinate, with origins reaching back into the Middle Ages. Inside, the high net vaulting, artful funerary monuments and the burial place of the Counts of Leiningen — who shaped the region's fortunes for centuries — are impressive. Colourful stained-glass windows and stone epitaphs tell of the eventful history of the town, which survived wars and fires several times. The slender tower defines the townscape and can be seen from many points in the centre. Regular services, concerts and the famous organ keep the church a living spiritual and cultural focal point to this day. So St Johannis is at once a quiet place of worship and a striking piece of town history in the very centre.
